Dromiceiomimus
TIME: Late Cretaceous
LOCALITY: North America (Alberta)
SIZE: 11 ft 6 in/3.5 m long
All ornithomimids had long, slender legs,
with the shin bone (tibia) about 20 percent
longer than the thigh bone (femur)--a sure
sign of a sprinter. Dromiceiomimus had even
longer shins than average, which indicates
that it was a very fast runner indeed. The
size of the brain cavity and eye sockets in
the skull of Dromiceiomimus shows that it had
an exceptionally large brain (proportionally
larger than that of a modern ostrich), and
huge eyes (proportionally larger than those
of any modern land animal). So, like modern
nocturnal or night-hunting creatures,
Dromiceiomimus most probably hunted after
dark, chasing small mammals and lizards
through the gathering gloom of the deciduous
woods in which it lived.
